about semeiosis

semeiosis encourages a systemic and transdisciplinary perspective of scientific knowledge. The journal gathers scientific production of undergraduate and graduate students, professors, researchers or scholars regardless of any field of knowledge, interested in discussing the conceptual and theoretical basis of semiotics, and in experimenting it in the comprehension of meaning-generating phenomena. The journal was born from the Research Group Semiotics of Communication coordinated by professors Irene Machado and Vinicius Romanini, from the Department of Communication and Arts (CCA) of the School of Communications and Arts (Escola de Comunicações e Artes – ECA), in the University of São Paulo (USP). The publication projects the concept of semeiosis to each dimension of culture, taking as semeiotic processes every meaning-generating system structured as an informational flow. This leads to a concept of semiosphere not necessarily linked to human culture, let alone to verbal and textual symbolic processes, as has been the tradition of semiologic and culturological studies born in the last century. The journal admits, at last, the hypothesis that information and signs may be present even in physical and chemical processes, which naturally turns semiotics into a transdisciplinary science, connected to recent debates about the integration of scientific knowledge and the necessity of building cognition according to the experience one has of the world as a whole. Such proposal starts by exploring the semiotic possibilities offered by the virtual environment, regarding the design and the edition of contents.
